YES, JAMES HOLZHAUER IS STILL WINNING ON 'JEOPARDY!' AND EVERYTHING TO KNOW ABOUT THE CHAMPION'S ONGOING STREAK

james Holzhauer is sitting on one pretty big money pot thanks to his numerous wins on Jeopardy! The professional gambler will attempt to increase his winnings and catch up to Jeopardy! record-holder Ken Jennings when he hits the buzzer once again on the upcoming installment of the famous game show Monday.

Holzhauer kicked Memorial Day weekend off on a good foot after he won his 27th game on Friday. The Las Vegas resident won a whopping $74,000 from the day’s round of trivia, lending him to finally cross over to the $2 million threshold. Since first appearing on Jeopardy! in April, Holzhauer has amassed $2,065,535.
Although he’s still trailing behind Jennings—the former Jeopardy! contestant with the highest earnings and most wins in the game show’s history— if Holzhauer continues to play as he has been, he’s positioned to catch up to Jennings and could very well break the record.
After a round of 74 games, Jennings set the Jeopardy! record with $2,520,700 worth of winnings in 2004. Holzhauer, who averages $76,501, has enjoyed a speedier climb to the top with Monday’s upcoming game only being his 28th so far.
Not to mention, Holzhauer currently holds the record for the top single-game total after he won $131,127 during a game on April 17. In fact, he holds the top 12 spots for highest single-game wins on Jeopardy! His top five highest single-game wins are all over the $100,000 mark. He won a cool $116,816 on April 23, $110,914 on April 9, $106,181 on April 16 and $101,682 on May 1.
Should he continue averaging at the same daily game rate or higher, Holzhauer could top Jennings’ record within a week.
As impressive of a time the University of Illinois alum is having on America’s longest-running game show, Holzhauer's route to get there wasn’t so glamorous. The father-of-one tried out online at least six times before he finally appeared on the national game show as a contestant. He also auditioned twice—once for Jeopardy! and once for Sports Jeopardy!—and got shot down both times before his 2019 debut.
The excitement surrounding Holzhauer is just as high as the 35-year-old’s winnings. Even Jennings is dazzled by the way Holzhauer plays the game. “I’m just gobsmacked by James. It’s absolutely insane what he’s been doing,” Jennings told Wired back in April.
“Like, I thought I had seen everything on Jeopardy!. And this is something I would have thought was just impossible, these numbers. Statically, he’s playing at as high a level as anyone who’s ever played the game. And then he’s got these incredibly confident wagers. He’s maximizing money. He can make two or three times what any other player ever has with that same level of play, which again is top-shelf. He’s as good as anybody,” Jennings said.
Albeit a controversial move by some Jeopardy! fans’ standards, one of Holzhauer’s best attributes is his willingness to make high bets. While the amounts he’s willing to bet is contrary to the typical wagers made on the show, Holzhauer is intentional with his wagers. He’s been known to make them based on special dates, like his wedding anniversary, his daughter’s birth date or a number that honors and represents another one of his relatives.
“As for the shoutouts, family will always be more important to me than money or winning on Jeopardy, and the bets were a fun and unconventional way for me to show them that,” Holzhauer told his hometown newspaper Naperville Sun in April.
